TITLE: Sound Supervisor
REPORTS TO: Director of Production
REPORTING STAFF: Sound Crew , Sound and Lighting Technician, Overhire Technicians
Chicago Shakespeare Theater seeks an experienced manager with well-developed communication and technical skills to lead our sound department. The Sound Supervisor is a key member of the production leadership team, managing an ambitious program averaging 12 productions per season in a 500-seat thrust space, 200-seat black box, and a revolutionary new flexible performance space seating up to 850, as well as several touring productions. They will partner with professional designers and ectors from Chicago and around the world managing both produced and presented work, and will need to thrive in a fast-paced and highly laborative work environment.
Position will begin in Fall of 2018.
- Serving as the primary liaison with sound designers with the goal of collaboratively realizing their designs.
- Managing the infrastructure of the sound department including the inventory, organization, maintenance, storage, and deployment of all department assets.
- Hiring, training, and managing both staff and overhire sound labor.
- Maintaining and creatively working within the established budgets for each production.
- Coordinating sound department needs with those of other production department s and working as a laborative partner to other departments' designers and technicians.
- Maintaining a thorough understanding of industry trends and best practices, and applying this knowledge to capital expenditures, obsolescence management, and investment strategy.
- Working both independently, and with designers to specify speaker placement for optimal system performance, especially in our large flexible space.
- Designing and building wireless racks as needed for CST productions.
- Managing Clear-Com infrastructure for all departments.
- Designing and occasionally installing QLab systems for rehearsals and performance.
- Recording musicians and actors as needed to create source material for our productions.
- Trouble-shooting and prioritizing notes during, before, and following tech rehearsals.
- Helping to prepare rental packages and other paperwork for load ins.
Required skills and qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of professional theatrical sound experience with 2 years of supervisory or management level experience, preferably in a regional theater producing environment.
- Proficient knowledge of Yamaha M7CL, LS9, and CL series consoles. Understanding of both console setup as well as best practices in operation for straight plays and musicals.
- Understanding of MIDI, SMPTE, and other interfaces for show control and communication between LX, sound, and projections.
- Comprehensive understanding of Yamaha DME infrastructure, Dante I/O protocols, networking infrastructure, Aviom monitoring systems, Clear-Com systems, Shure wireless equipment and Wireless Workbench frequency coordination, QLab software, KVM infrastructure.
- An understanding of rigging principles as it relates to audio equipment.
- Healthy knowledge of electrical theory and safe working practices, especially with wiring and soldering projects.
- Comfortable working at heights of up to 50 feet, and knowledge and implementation of fall prevention standards.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and delegate with a positive and supportive attitude.
- Demonstrated track record of successful artistic laboration with multiple departments and disciplines.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record is required.
- Knowledge of safe work practices related to electricity and working at heights of up to 50 feet.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
Hours and Compensation
Position is full time and is often scheduled to work six days of work per week including nights, weekends, and occasional holidays. Hours and scheduling will vary and are subject to change based on the needs of each production or project. The position is salaried with benefits.
