The Philadelphia Orchestra
President and CEO
The Board of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association (POA) seeks an inspired, strategically focused, and engaging President and CEO to lead this storied and distinguished symphony.
Philadelphia has long regarded its Orchestra as one of its greatest cultural gems. Yet, like most cities, over the past generation Philadelphia saw a considerable shift in the traditional audience and financial model for its Orchestra. Increasing financial pressures required many changes to be made, and yet the Orchestra has played continuously and adapted realistically.
Today, the Orchestra is proud of how far it has come. The enthusiastic, inventive artistic leadership of music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin has galvanized the musicians and created magic in the hall. The rich “Philadelphia Sound” is as rich as ever and the Orchestra attracts and retains the marvelous musicians that have made its reputation. Over the course of 2011-2016, the Orchestra paid for the cost of debt reorganization, raised $75 million in transition funds, achieved balanced annual budgets, increased its endowment by $40 million, and increased total annual paid audience from 156,000 tickets to 177,000. Together with the Board, senior leadership has increased efficiencies to reduce its cost structure; the recurring annual fund has recovered; earned revenue has exceeded expectations; and the Orchestra is completely out of debt, having developed some of the most responsible fiscal management practices known to the industry.
The Board and search committee seek a new President and CEO who can seize on this momentum to bring new and exciting presentations of the classical tradition to new and equally excited audiences. S/he will be tasked with leading the Orchestra into greater financial stability through ambitious fundraising, including an endowment campaign; promoting an internal and external culture of trust and collaboration; supporting the Orchestra's evolving artistic excellence; building the Orchestra's capacity to expand and diversify audiences and patrons through innovative programming; strengthening partnerships with key external organizations, the media, and business and civic leaders; and continuing to explore promising domestic and international markets.
The Orchestra has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment of its next President and CEO. All inquiries, nominations, and resumes with cover letters should be directed in confidence to the search firm at www.imsearch.com/6397.
