POSITION OVERVIEW:  

Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000 DOE/neg.

Location: San Diego, CA (Point Loma area)       

Reports to: Board of Directors

Direct reports: 3 (Membership Manager, Operations Manager, Exhibition Coordinator) 

 

WHO WE ARE:

Visions Art Museum (VAM) is a premiere national venue for viewing and exhibiting contemporary art quilts and textiles. Our community of international artists engages with lectors and the public through exhibitions, programs and events, promoting appreciation and understanding of quilts, textile and fiber works as fine art. VAM's history began over 30 years ago, when Quilt San Diego was established to create and host an international biennial juried art exhibition, Quilt Visions, which continues to this day. In 2008, the organization opened a physical space, Visions Art Museum, hosting the Quilt Visions and Interpretations biennials, as well as contemporary quilt and textile exhibitions year-round. VAM has since collaborated with hundreds of artists and hosts over 20 exhibits annually, including online exhibits, member challenges, and juried exhibitions such as the Quilt Visions and Interpretations biennial. Located in the stunning Liberty Station Arts District, VAM plays a crucial role in the San Diego local art scene, educating and inspiring the next generation of contemporary quilt artists. VAM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, governed by a 10-person Board of ectors, and supported by over 500 annual members.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

VAM seeks an experienced executive to lead the organization through its next pivotal growth stage. Working closely with the Board, the Executive ector oversees all areas of the museum's operations, including fundraising, administration, strategic planning, marketing and outreach, exhibitions, and programs. She/he will manage an annual budget of approximately $300,000 and supervise a staff of 3 team members, along with a large base of dedicated volunteers.

 

Initial priorities for this position include:

1.      Maintaining the exceptionally high quality of VAM's exhibits and events

2.      Sustaining and growing museum funding

3.      Executing a marketing & communications strategy to develop VAM's brand and build awareness

4.      Forming and strengthening relationships with partners throughout the community, including museums, educational institutions, and other arts organizations

5.      Coaching, mentoring, and developing staff

6.      Sustaining and developing membership

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

People and Strategy

o  Promote a laborative work environment where all staff are engaged, informed, and empowered to participate

o  Build relationships with community and partner organizations, further promoting VAM as the premiere location for viewing and exhibiting international artists

o  Foster open and effective communication with the Board, inviting Board members' opinions and suggestions

o  Assist with Board outreach and recruitment, working to promote diversity amongst the Board and museum membership

 

Development and Fundraising

o  Diversify VAM's revenue streams, ensuring the organization is on the path to financial sustainability and growth

o  Enhance the organization's grant-writing capacity (internally or with consultants)

o  Build and cultivate a donor portfolio

o  Expand the organization's current successful Giving Circle

 

Marketing and Communications

o  Serve as VAM's main spokesperson to members, the general public and key partners and constituents

o  Oversee VAM's traditional and social media strategies and plans

o  Build and nurture relationships in the community and with local and national arts, museums, and educational institutions

o  Utilize social media as a mechanism for communication and engagement

o  Boost brand awareness nationally as well as VAM's overall footprint in San Diego

o  Increase the size and diversity of the organization's volunteer base, with an emphasis on volunteer stewardship and alizing training procedures

 

Museum Operations

o  Optimize business operations, practices, and workflow

o  In collaboration with the curatorial committee, ensure existing and potential new exhibits and events advance VAM's mission, are financially sustainable, and adequately staffed

o  Recruit and engage new and existing artists, ensuring all artists have a positive experience

o  Manage the museum's retail operations to maximize quality and revenue for the organization

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

o  Minimum of 5 years in leadership or senior management positions

o  Experienced working with a board of community leaders, including reporting, advising and board member recruitment

o  Experience with an arts organization preferable; commitment to the arts required

o  Familiarity with the management of leases, maintenance contracts, and business licenses

o  Demonstrated strategic planning experience

o  Proven success with fundraising and increasing organizational revenue

o  A high level of emotional intelligence, with strong written and oral communication skills

o  Superior attention to detail and problem-solving skills

o  Charismatic, warm and welcoming; a true "people-person"

o  Fosters a respectful, transparent, and laborative work environment

o  Willing to work evenings and weekends as required for exhibits and special events
