The Flagstaff Arts Council invites applications and referrals for the position of Executive Director.
Founded in 1999, the Flagstaff Arts Council is the leading agency for the arts and sciences sector in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Arts Council's mission is to promote, strengthen, and advocate for the arts in the community.
The Arts Council is currently housed in the county-owned Coconino Center for the Arts, which is comprised of a 200-seat theatre, three distinct gallery spaces, and offices. It annually hosts multiple major arts exhibitions, special events, and performances in the Center, as well as workshops, classes, and other programs.
Under a contract with the City of Flagstaff, the Arts Council administers the Art and Science Fund grant programs. In addition, it produces Flagstaff365.com, a comprehensive calendar of events for all of the City, the ArtBox Institute, First Friday ArtWalk events, and the annual Viola Awards and Gala.
As an independent 501c3 not-for-profit organization, the Arts Council has a Board of directors that represents the larger community. The Board of Directors works closely with the Executive director and provides oversight for policy, finance, and long term development. The annual budget is approximately $1 million, including the pass-through Arts and Sciences Fund grant of $360,000.
The Arts Council recently commissioned a year-long study of the facility needs of many of the Flagstaff area arts groups, partly funded by the City and County. This has opened up a new community-wide dialogue of the needs of the many arts and science organizations in the region.
Reporting to the Board of directors, the Executive Director, as chief operating officer of the corporation, directs and oversees all programs, operations, and policies consistent with the organization's mission and goals, as well as supervising a professional staff of three to five.
The Executive Director is charged with maintaining an effective fiscally responsible operating model for the Council, balancing between performances of community-based arts groups, the Council's own activities, and other community/corporate rentals and usage.
The Executive Director is responsible for general operations, budget development, programming, strategy implementation, general administration, revenue generation, and community liaison, overseeing staff working in such areas as marketing, fundraising, box office, front of house, technical and artistic operations, building maintenance and finance.
Located in the mountains of northern Arizona, Flagstaff is the county seat of Coconino County with a metropolitan population of 130,000. At an elevation of 7,000 feet, Flagstaff is a four season community where an eclectic mix of small town charm and endless outdoor adventure beckons.

The ideal candidate will have previous senior experience in leading arts organizations, a track record in not-for-profit arts venue management, and a university degree in arts and/or business management or equivalent experience in facility management and administration. Experience with arts councils would be extremely valuable.
The new Executive director will have excellent programming, analytical, financial, supervisory, and organizational skills, with demonstrated leadership ability and community partnering. Other necessary characteristics would include political savvy and diplomacy, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The Executive Director represents the Arts Council to the public, the media, and the arts industry at-large through leadership and participation in community activities. The Arts Council has a pivotal role in the cultural, educational, and economic enrichment of the City of Flagstaff. The Executive Director must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, elected officials, the media, artists, artist managers, other groups, sponsors, educational institutions, volunteers, and audiences.
