Carnegie Mellon University’s Master of Arts Management (MAM) program, offered jointly through the College of Fine Arts and the Heinz College of Information Systems, Public Policy and Management, invites experienced arts administrators/educators to apply for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor. This full time, teaching-track position is an uncommon opportunity for an arts management professional who is committed to fostering the growth of emerging arts leaders to be an essential team member within a fine arts college of nationally ranked schools in partnership with a top-ranked public policy and information systems school, in one of the most respected research universities in the world.
We see this faculty position as a highly specialized, hands-on role in the MAM program for someone with a passion for teaching and developing emerging arts leaders, fluency in arts administration practices (preferably fundraising and visual arts management), and the ability to work in collaborative and dynamic ways with a diverse group of faculty, students and staff. You should have an essential understanding of current and emerging management models and systems in the arts and culture sectors, including data-informed arts management practices, and multi-generational mentorship, collaborative and communication skills in order to contribute to the mission and vision of the MAM program.
We are especially interested in candidates who share a love for progressive ideas across the arts, who can offer an innovative approach to teaching and learning, and can employ outside-the-box, entrepreneurial approaches to active and experiential learning.
For over 30 years, the MAM program has combined the renowned interdisciplinary and creative power of Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts with the analytical expertise of Heinz College in order to prepare our students to lead arts organizations at the highest level and have lasting impact on the communities they serve. Our “Arts, Analytics, Action” approach centers on the intersection of people, policy, and technology with an arts focus, valuing a skills-based, future-facing, experiential approach to arts management education. MAM students can follow a standard two-year track, or double degree tracks with our partners at University of Pittsburgh (MAM and JD) or University of Bologna (MAM and Innovation and Organization of Culture and the Arts degree). The MAM program also is host to two innovative initiatives including Future Tenant, a downtown Pittsburgh gallery and performance space, and the Arts Management and Technology Laboratory, a research center that explores the intersection between arts management and technology. The MAM program currently boasts over 750 alumni in 20 countries who are making a significant impact in performing arts, visual arts, and arts policy organizations across the globe.
You will carry a full-time teaching load which may include coursework in fundraising and visual arts management, capstone/thesis supervision, and the advising of one of the arts management experiential initiatives. You also will serve as one of the program’s three academic advisors, helping students to achieve their academic goals and follow their paths for success. There may be additional opportunities for you to teach in our joint-degree partner program at the University of Bologna, Italy.
Your qualifications should include:
• A record of success as a professional, senior-level arts administrator especially in the areas of fundraising, visual arts management or strategic management
• A graduate degree in the arts, arts administration, public administration, business administration, social sciences, or allied field; terminal degree (MFA, MBA, PhD, etc.) preferred.
• University teaching experience
• Strong data literacy acumen and ability to integrate analytical principles into course curriculum
• Willingness and capacity to learn new technologies
• Strong commitment to teaching and learning innovation
• Ability to work in teams
• Commitment to the MAM program’s outcomes, mission, and values
Teaching-track appointments typically are made at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor, with the possibility of promotion to the ranks of Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor. The position is a faculty appointment within the College of Fine Arts, with a courtesy appointment in Heinz College. The preferred start date would be August 2018, but we also would consider a January 2019 start date.
