The Executive Director is the chief executive officer and administrative leader of Ballet West, reporting to the Board of Trustees through the Chairman. The Executive Director works in partnership with the Artistic Director and the Board to develop and execute the strategic vision that supports Ballet West’s mission.
The Executive Director will be a knowledgeable and enthusiastic ambassador for the Ballet. The Executive Director will have a keen business sense and entrepreneurial vision for opportunities that will support the Ballet’s growth both artistically and financially. The position will partner with many stakeholders to set and maintain a collaborative leadership model that will strengthen the organization by creating a positive and synergistic relationship between the artistic and administrative sides of the organization.
The Executive Director will implement strategies to ensure organizational sustainability of both the Ballet and the Academy. This includes the ability to:
Maximize contributed and earned revenue
Expand marketing, communications, audience development and public image
Develop, oversee, monitor and report on the organization’s financial performance
Guide the administration and operations of Ballet West
Supervise a professional staff which implement operations, fundraising, marketing and financial management in support of artistic and educational programs.
In partnership with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors, provides strong organizational leadership to drive strategic planning efforts and set the overall vision and direction for Ballet West.
In collaboration with the Artistic Director and other members of the senior management team, implements strategic and financial plans focused on achieving the organizational goals, ensuring programs and resources are aligned.
Provides creative and innovative leadership for the continued enhancement of Ballet West’s programmatic, educational, and community development activities consistent with its mission.
Maintains oversight of operations and budget to ensure prudent fiscal management.
Establishes and implements operating and capital budgets that will allow for the artistic and financial success of Ballet West, with ongoing reporting of results to the Board.
Effectively represents and positions the Ballet in successful relationships with donors, local and state government, corporations, foundations and the public to maintain and enhance community support that will secure the organization’s future.
Provides leadership to all board and staff related fundraising initiatives; establishes and implements donor cultivation, relations and stewardship strategies, and initiates plans for successful campaigns.
Enhances Ballet West’s visibility by building strong relationships with appropriate cultural and civic organizations, government officials and community leaders, including participation in high profile community activities, speaking engagements and social events.
Oversees the development and effective implementation of marketing campaigns with the goal of increasing audiences and earned revenue.
Oversees the administration, operations, marketing, budgeting and fiscal management of the Academy
Develops and maintains business policies and procedures that ensure the efficient and professional operation of the organization.
Hires, manages, mentors and motivates a skilled professional full time and part time administrative staff that achieves success in daily operations and supports Ballet West’s future needs and growth. Participates in the hiring of artistic personnel.
Effectively engages and manages relationships with board members to maximize their participation in Ballet West and their contribution toward its success and growth.
Ballet West seeks a thoughtful and sensitive leader, capable of understanding and supporting the needs and expectations of the board, artistic director, artists, staff and community leaders. The selected candidate will be a leader in the field of arts management.
Strong candidates will have the following experience and capabilities:
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in arts management, nonprofit management or related field preferred.
Successful experience in a management and/or senior leadership position with a performing arts organization.
Ability to work with the Board of Directors to guide the organization into the future.
Effective diplomat and decision maker with the ability to successfully implement operational and programming activities to further the organization’s mission
Proven fundraiser with a polished, personable, welcoming style and a natural relationship builder with experience securing significant gifts from individuals, as well as foundation, government and corporate grants.
Demonstrated experience in providing marketing leadership to increase earned income
General management experience with a strong understanding of finance, budgeting, information systems, human resources and facilities management.
Demonstrated ability to move organizational projects forward in an inclusive and streamlined manner
Proven track record of success facilitating organizational change and development within a growing organization
Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
Track record of growing another organization or business and a great appreciation for the arts, and dance in particular
