Street-Level Youth Media educates Chicago’s youth in media arts and emerging technologies for use in self-expression, communication, and social change. Street-Level’s programs build critical thinking skills in youth who have been historically neglected by policymakers and mass media. Using video and audio production, digital arts and the Internet, Street-Level’s young people address community issues, access advanced communication technology, and gain inclusion in our information-based society.
Street-Level’s facility and free media arts programs provide Chicago’s youth with a much-needed outlet for positive self-expression and cultural production. Our programs serve over 800 young people throughout community and school-based programs.

Program Management and Administration
As part of the Program team, works with the Director of Programs to inform and implement vision and strategies for SLYM programming.
With support staff, coordinates all aspects of SLYM year-round programming and activities, community engagement and special events.
Manages relationships with SLYM partners and stakeholders to gain community support for SLYM programming and solicit input to inform program offerings.
Ensures that SLYM programming is in full compliance with the legal and professional standards required of all SLYM grants and other contracts of engagement.
With support staff ensures the timely preparation, execution and monitoring of SLYM program budgets, partner and artist agreements.
Provides program information to support fundraising efforts on behalf SLYM programming.
Maintains working knowledge of best practices in community-based youth arts education, authentic youth engagement, and contemporary art practices relevant to the position.
Maintains schedules and calendar of programs and events for all SLYM on-site and school based programming.
Supports and informs the ongoing professional development and evaluation of SLYM teaching artists.
Performs other administrative and departmental duties as required. Youth Relations
Builds framework for ensuring that youth voice is at the forefront in decisions impacting SLYM.
Coordinates youth intern and volunteer opportunities to assist with SLYM projects and operations.
Oversees youth registration and orientation of SLYM.
Works with artists and youth to coordinate presentation of artistic work.
Supports youth in fostering a sense of community and the creation of a safe space (intellectually, physically, emotionally) for all participants.
Supports youth in the creation of a SLYM leadership board. Site Management/Maintenance
Maintains the SLYM center as a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
Ensures that SLYM maintains ongoing hours of operation with adequate staffing and oversight.
Ensures that SLYM operates within the framework of organizational policies and procedures, with particular attention given to safety and emergency procedures.
Oversees the tracking and maintenance of equipment and supplies; creates purchase and repair requests as needed to support the quality and care of the SLYM center. Outreach/Recruitment
Acts as an advocate for SLYM and its educational activities by representing SLYM through various networks and collaborations, community and artistic events, as well as, sector specific conferences and convenings.
Effectively communicates Urban Gateways’ mission and programming priorities to its various stakeholders.
As part of the Program Team, participates in the recruitment and contracting of teaching artists.
Works with Communications Department to inform the creation of collateral materials for SLYM. Measurement and Documentation
Supports collection of data and program documentation to measure and articulate program impact and inform programmatic decisions.
Maintains organized database of SLYM youth to accurately track program participation and utilizes data to inform outreach, recruitment and retention strategies. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in arts or education-related field or equivalent.
3-5 years of related work experience (previous nonprofit experience preferred)
Experience in the management, coordination and implementation of youth programs.
Authentic interest in and advocacy for teens and the joys/challenges before them
Proficiency in Spanish, a plus
Knowledge of the evolving field of Creative Youth Development
Strong skills in logistical organization; ability to prioritize and multitask.
Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Sensitivity toward and ability to collaborate and work with diverse populations.
Experience with Microsoft Office, SalesForce, and other operating systems as needed.
Ability to work weeknights and weekends.
Must have a valid Illinois Driver’s license.
