The mission of Penumbra Theatre Company is to create professional productions that are artistically excellent, thought provoking, relevant, and illuminate the human condition through the prism of the African American experience. Founded in 1976, Penumbra Theatre is Minnesota’s only professional African American theater. We produce a four-show season and several community outreach events annually. Penumbra is known for its signature ensemble aesthetic that plays powerfully in an intimate 250-seat proscenium/thrust theater. Penumbra produces work from within the black theatre canon, both classics and commissions, including new play readings and workshops.
The Director of Advancement provides the leadership, direction and coordination of fundraising strategies and activities to support America’s largest and longest-running African American theatre. The Director is responsible for institutional funding, individual giving, special events, donor communication and board fundraising.
A member of the senior management team, Reporting to the Managing Director, the Director of Advancement is a high energy, seasoned development professional with a proven track record in building strong relationships with current and prospective donors. Working closely with the Co-Artistic Directors, Managing Director, Director of Marketing & Communications and other senior staff and the Board, the Director of Advancement will be the catalyst for helping Penumbra achieve its financial goals. She/he will be an integral part of the management team and a key player in the growth and expansion of the 40-year-old multi-faceted arts organization.
The Director of Advancement:
Conceptualizes, leads, implements and monitors annual resource development strategy/plan
Constantly evaluates progress toward fundraising goals, and is accountable to and works with Managing Director to adjust strategies
Thoroughly understands our mission, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs and finances and is able to articulate them to diverse audiences
Manages institutional giving campaign and relationships with institutional funders, including corporations, foundation and public funders
Works with Artistic and Program Directors on proposal design, proposal writing and reporting
Develops and implements plan for cultivating, retaining and upgrading donors at all levels
Plans and oversees individual giving program to engage donors at all levels, including monthly and planned giving.
Oversees and implements major donor program, including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
Plans and manages donor cultivation events, including opening night events for major donors
Supervises and implements sponsored special events and evaluates endorsed events opportunities
Conducts prospect research and ensures donor information storage
Ensures the integrity of the fundraising database, as well as online giving, gift processing, recording and acknowledgement
Develops creative strategies for expanding funding base through online campaigns, social media, including crowd funding, and web visibility, working in conjunction with the Director of Marketing and Communications
Works with senior staff and the Board Development Committee to ensure board members succeed in their fundraising responsibilities
Coordinates fiscal management and income tracking with finance and administrative staff
Coordinates the creation of the department’s operational budget
Oversees expenditures within budget
Works with Managing Director, Program Director and Marketing Director to ensure all teams’ work is coordinated, strategic and meets donor communication goals
Supervises consultants, interns and fundraising team volunteers
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in multifaceted development work;
An organized and strategic approach to fundraising with experience in managing, developing and coordinating successful fundraising efforts;
Demonstrated success in major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, direct response, foundation, government and corporate funding;
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling and comprehensive to the potential donor;
Leadership and strategic qualities to manage volunteers and to direct day-to-day activities and operations;
Experience developing solid working relationships with Board members and donors;
Demonstrated experience in developing and managing budgets; computer literate, including knowledge of the most up-to-date donor tracking systems;
Very strong writing skills;
A track record as an effective communicator who is articulate and persuasive in written and verbal communications; adept at crafting proposals, donor correspondence and other kinds of materials and making presentations to a variety of audiences;
Strong commitment to social justice and a background or interest in the arts; and,
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university required.
