The Children’s Library provides library services and programs for children, families, schools and other organizations. The Children’s Library Assistant is responsible primarily for circulation duties and preparation for children’s programming. Ability to assist with programming presentation, as needed.
Circulation Desk; check out and discharge materials
Assist patrons in finding materials
Provide membership and library cards for patrons
Answer phone calls, emails and provide information and assistance in person; take messages
Assist patrons with use of computers/technology
Review overdue list with patrons
Ability to assist story hour/story time and groups tours
Perform ongoing and project-based collection maintenance on all materials including shelving items, general tidying, and other related tasks
Create and maintain displays
Prepare, set-up, and clean-up of thematic projects, crafts, and snacks
Set-up and tear-down chairs, tables, etc. for Children’s Library programs
Maintains awareness of Children’s Library premises
Records patron reservations of pre-scheduled events
Other Children’s Library and administrative tasks as required
Other Skills/Attributes/Experience Required:
Dependability, consideration of others, and an organized approach is required
A passion for libraries and the services they provide; an experience and understanding of children and family dynamics
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency with the English language
Experience in a front-line, fast-paced public service children’s environment
Prior experience working with children
Comfort with assisting with children’s programming
A positive and energetic disposition
Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the safety and security of all patrons and staff
Dedication to professionalism
Some knowledge of children’s literature
A team-based philosophy and work ethic
Attention to detail and a willingness to be efficient
Basic working knowledge of MS Word and Excel
Cash handling experience
Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
A High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
Part Time (20-23) hours/week dependent upon Saturday schedule)
