Executive Director - Town Hall Theater

The historic Town Hall Theater invites applications and referrals for the position of Executive Director.

The Position:

Town Hall Theater might be the busiest small-town theatre in the country, presenting over 170 events a year.  The presentations include THT’s productions, big-name talent, dances, concerts, performances from THT’s twelve resident companies, films, and rentals (which might include the high school prom, weddings, memorial services, town meetings, and all manner of other community events).

This is a community-based theatre with professional standards, serving the needs of local performers, audiences, and organizations.

Located in the heart of Middlebury’s downtown, THT is an historic theatre space (circa 1883) that was completely renovated in 2008 with 232 seats, excellent projection and lighting facilities, rehearsal space, a gallery, and offices. The Theater is in the process of purchasing an abutting property in order to secure the possibility of future expansion. There are 6 full-time and 4 part-time staff.  The annual budget for salaries, utilities, and building maintenance is $455,000.  Production costs are shared with our resident companies.  Its Jackson Gallery hosts 6 to 8 art installations annually.  THT boasts a cutting-edge education program and a strong relationship with Middlebury College.  Its long-time founding, Executive Director is stepping away from his current role in order to devote more time to artistic production.

The THT Endowment was established in 2012 to give THT a measure of financial security as it extends its mission into the future. Generous financial and volunteer support from the community has been a key to the success of THT and has allowed the endowment to grow to over 1.6 million in the past year. The Fund is professionally managed by the Vermont Community Foundation.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have five years’ senior management experience in the cultural sector, preferably in a performing arts venue.

A degree in arts and/or business administration or equivalent experience in the field is desirable but not a prerequisite.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is accountable for the general management of THT.  The Executive Director will generate annual budgets in conjunction with the Artistic Director and other staff members, and is responsible for monthly reporting including financial results, cash flow projections, and balance-sheet management.

Other responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of the administrative functions of the organization, planning, organizing, and directing all fund-raising and marketing, and developing excellent relationships with the resident companies. Building a close, collaborative working relationship with the Artistic Director and the rest of this tight knit staff is essential to the success of the Executive Director and the future of THT.

Other desirable credentials: A track record in fund-raising and demonstrated leadership in annual fund drives and endowment building. Comprehensive knowledge of many performing arts forms and all aspects of arts venue management.  The ideal candidate is an industry professional with existing networks within the cultural sector and a personal vision of how the arts play a role within the life of a community.  Excellent public and Board communication skills required.

Application Process:

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package.  Deadline for applications: Friday, April 27, 2018.

Interested candidates are invited to submit a cover letter and resume with a list of references and salary requirements in confidence to:
