The Workhouse Arts Foundation, Inc. (WAF) is currently seeking a Director of Development.
job summary. The Director of Development is a senior staff member responsible for the oversight and success in traditional development, community relations, volunteer management, events management, grant writing, and membership programs. Also responsible for the profitability and success of large earned-revenue events. Director serves as the primary liaison and motivator for the organization’s Development Committee of the Board of Directors. There is great potential for all areas of development to grow.
Roles and Responsibilities.
ü In collaboration with Development Committee, designs, coordinates and executes an aggressive fundraising program with the purpose of growing contributions and event-related earned revenue significantly.
ü Directly solicits and liaises with major donors to acquire funds needed to meet organizational and departmental goals.
ü Supports and nurtures the Development Committee and its subcommittees; ensures that meeting minutes are drafted and communication is effective and timely. Reports regularly to Development Committee; drafts reports for Chair to report to Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
ü Drafts or ensures the drafting of proposals, grants, and all formal funding requests.
ü Ensures the timely updating of information in the organization’s donor database software system (Donor Perfect)
ü Successfully leads, plans, coordinates and executes WAF/Workhouse fundraising events supported by the WAF events manager. This includes BrewFest, WinterFest, Fireworks, Haunted Trail, Annual Gala, Collect!, and Friends of the Workhouse events; supports events lead by other staff including Ice Cream Social, Fine Arts Festival, Open Houses, Bridal Showcase, and Second Saturdays. Develops and successfully implements additional events as determined appropriate by CEO and the Board of Directors.
ü Meets or exceeds annual budget goals (revenue and expenses). Annually sets budget goals under the guidance and approval of the CEO, and in cooperation with the Finance Department.
ü Manages annual mailings and annual appeals to all stakeholders.
ü Processes all contributions (unrestricted, restricted, in-kind), to include applying WAF accounting classifications, inputting into data bases, and ensuring the send of appropriate written acknowledgements.
ü Manages to success additional fundraising initiatives including, membership program growth, endowment funding, capital funding, and planned giving.
· Community relations.
o Organizes, coordinates and executes the community relations program that includes engagement with business/civic groups in South County; provides/coordinates off-campus presentations; represents WAF/Workhouse at community events; organizes and presents community campus events
o Ensures the growth and successful management of volunteers. Ensures timely and appropriate receipt of benefits for all those who volunteer with the Workhouse.
· Event rentals. Oversees the management, operation, and growth of the event rental program to dramatically grow rental income and rental program success.
· Supervision Responsibilities. Direct reports include Events Manager, Volunteer Manager/Program, and any part time development personnel. Responsible for all annual reviews within the department as well as hiring, discipline, and firing as needed under the guidance of the CEO.

ü Ability to read and summarize financial statements
ü Ability to cultivate and grow strong working relationships with board members
ü Excellent project management skills
ü Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office and Donor Perfect)
ü Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in fundraising for a non-profit organization
ü Minimum of three (3) years of experience managing a multi-faceted development program
ü Experience and success with foundation and corporate grant-making processes
ü Familiarity with and love for the visual arts, performing arts, arts education, and history education
· Prior Education/Training.
ü Bachelor’s degree in business, arts management, or marketing preferred
ü Course work or special training in business management, profitability, and fundraising a plus
· The Workhouse Arts Foundation is a major regional arts organization. This position calls for a strong leader and doer with experience in a broad range of fundraising initiatives. In addition, the organization is poised for significant increases in fundraising income and public awareness. The Director of Development role is a position best suited for someone who desires the opportunity to make a mark and create a legacy, and not a position for the faint of heart.
· This position requires close collaboration with a range of staff and volunteer functions.
· Evening and weekend work is required for donor outreach and WAF events on a fairly regular basis.
