POSITION: Director of Advocacy & Public Information
Regular full-time: 40 hours per week (30hr part-time negotiable)
Work location: 2667 Prosperity Ave, Fairfax, Virginia 22031.
Position Reports to: President & CEO
Salary: $50,000 - $68,000 relative to experience
Other Compensation: 100% major medical health benefits for employee, with the option to add family coverage at employee expense. ARTSFAIRFAX (Arts Council of Fairfax County, Inc.) is a 501c3 local arts service organization that provides arts information and advocacy services to the general public; promotion, funding and capacity building services to artists, arts organizations and arts programs in Fairfax County; and collaborates with the public and private sectors to advance the creative landscape for a prosperous Fairfax County. ARTSFAIRFAX has a staff of 5-6 FTE, and an annual operating budget of $1.4M.
The Director of Advocacy & Public Information will have an opportunity to work with a new brand and communications technology to meet the organizations’ key mission objectives in arts advocacy, marketing, and public information. The position will work with the President and CEO to set organizational priorities and strategies in these functions, and will collaborate with two other senior positions to advance the organization’s objectives. The position manages 1-2 part-time staff and interns as needed for communications, research & data management activities.
§ Direct local, state and federal Advocacy Services at the ‘grass tops and grass roots’ level.
o Keep abreast of legislation and issues, at the local, state, and federal levels, effecting arts funding and other arts related policies.
o Utilize Voter Voice communications tool to assist Fairfax County arts advocates, and build the “Fairfax Arts Network” as an advocates’ list.
o Build communications to inform Fairfax elected officials and their district constituents relative to the arts in their district and the County; provide arts related information to elected officials and their staff as requested;
o Coordinate Fairfax’s Arts Advocacy Day (Board of Supervisors annual budget hearings in April), promotion, community reception, and testimony speakers (working with President & CEO relative to annual budget request).
o Promote and garner Fairfax community participation in State Arts Advocacy Day (January), and National Arts Advocacy Day (March)
o Serve as staff manager to Board Advocacy Committee (advisory and support).
§ Direct Public information Services in accordance with organizational mission, strategic plan, and program services. The completion of a new website, CRM, and rebrand roll-out is anticipated by June 30, 2018.
o Implement a new brand identity, marketing language and visual image in all communications materials and public information.
o Develop marketing assets; informational and promotional materials, newsletters, annual report, etc. working with vendors and contractors as needed.
o Develop and implement marketing strategies for specific programs and services, e.g. Artists Residency Program, Public Art Program, Creative Aging Festival, Master Arts Plan, arts impact studies.
o Serve as staff manager to Board Communications Committee (advisory and support).
o Coordinate 3-4 Arts Advisory Committee meetings per year.
o Develop and manage advocacy and informational services annual budget in coordination with President & CEO.
§ Manage part-time positions:
o Research & Data Manager (20 hrs pr wk); implementation and management of new CRM and organizational data; coordination of all research and survey work; maintenance of web and office technology.
o Communications Manager (20 hrs pr wk); Maintain website informational/graphic content; conduct social media communications; assist Director of A&PI in other public information services.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Appropriate level of experience in related advocacy, marketing, communications and/or public relations positions.
- Highly effective written and verbal communications skills with strong editing skills.
- Ability to plan, initiate and complete tasks and projects without close supervision, as well as ability to work well in a team planning environment.
- Ability to effectively supervise staff and volunteers.
- Ability to work diplomatically with elected officials, board members, donors, and arts community.
- Ability to work with graphic designers to produce information materials as needed
- Experience with information management systems, CRMs, email campaign management (Constant Contact preferred), web design and HTML (WordPress preferred) and Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
