Associate Curator

Position Summary


The CJM seeks an Associate Curator to join its Curatorial team and to play a key role in evolving The CJM’s curatorial presence and production of exhibitions that engage the newest ideas about the Jewish experience and contemporary art. Led by the Chief Curator, the full team consists of four professionals who work to generate original exhibitions, and to schedule and produce traveling exhibitions from other institutions. 

The Associate Curator will be responsible for planning, organizing and executing exhibitions presented by The CJM.  The individual in this position will act as a liaison with lenders and artists and will work closely with the Curatorial and Exhibitions teams and other museum departments. The Associate Curator will also generate occasional original exhibitions, and will create content for public and educational programs and for museum–wide events related to specific exhibitions or to The CJM’s unique brand.  

The Associate Curator will be expected to assist on a variety of tasks, including the scheduling of work flow for the curatorial team and managing cross–departmental communications about exhibitions planning and content.  The successful candidate for this position will have strong administrative skills, a collaborative work style, and interest in a professional growth opportunity.


Essential Job Responsibilities


  • Represent The CJM in mounting traveling exhibitions that come to The CJM from other venues  
  • Develop original exhibition proposals and curate exhibitions as determined by the Chief Curator and the Executive Director
  • Initiate and confirm loans of art in coordination with The CJM’s Registrar and Exhibitions Manager
  • Perform research on artists, periods, styles, specific works, location of works, and photograph sources
  • Prepare exhibition checklists with thumbnails, and exhibition layout
  • Assist in coordination of work flow and internal communications re exhibitions calendar
  • Collaborate with a creative services professional to develop exhibition design, graphics, and assist in production of brochures, newsletters and catalogs.  Review exhibitions related copy
  • Write for exhibitions, including wall texts, labels, brochure copy and essays 
  • Assist with installation including the production of exhibition labels 
  • Liaise with the public, donors, lenders, artists, dealers, guest curators, other institutions and staff on exhibitions planning, interpretive programming, and fundraising efforts
  • Speak publicly and help educate visitors about exhibitions at The CJM
  • Review unsolicited artist submissions with curatorial team
  • Participate in monitoring exhibitions expenses and budget preparation


Minimum Qualifications


  • Graduate degree in Art History, Curatorial, Jewish, or Museum Studies
  • Three to five years of curatorial experience in a contemporary art museum or cultural history museum 
  • At least one year or multiple projects with supervisory responsibilities
  • Informed understanding of a museum’s responsibilities to serve the public and its communities
  • Writing and editorial training and expertise
  • Commitment to the mission, vision and core values of The CJM


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Jewish visual culture, Jewish philosophy, ideas and history; intellectual curiosity regarding comparative cultures
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Track record of being a collaborative and flexible team player; skilled in working across functional teams
  • Ability to organize complex ideas and present to colleagues and to the public
  • Excellent written and verbal communications 
  • Highly developed organizational skills, detail-oriented 
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, MAC and PC platforms
