Plan and obtain annual art exhibit programming, two exhibits per season.
Develop educational and outreach materials related to exhibits (school guides, tours, talks.) Assist with group tour and special event tour requests for art exhibits. Manage Four Arts permanent art collection
Functions of the position:
Research, select, plan, negotiate, contract, and implement Art Exhibitions and related gallery talks and lectures. Design all exhibition layouts and work closely with Building Manager/Art Handler on installation and lighting. Curate exhibitions in O’Keeffe Gallery and Mary Alice Fortin Children’s Art Gallery. Write accompanying catalog or brochure if necessary, and all label copy. Design and obtain exhibition title signs and didactic panels. Oversee art selection for invitations to art exhibit events.
Coordinate packing and shipping arrangements with lender and Director of Buildings & Grounds (and art handlers) for incoming and outgoing exhibitions. Upon receipt of exhibit, oversee unpacking of exhibition by the art handlers and complete condition report on each object unpacked. Advise lender of any condition changes. If necessary, arrange for conservation by an outside conservator. At close of exhibit check condition and update report on each object. Oversee packing if required by Contract. Obtain exhibition installation photographs for files. Oversee insurance for the exhibits.
Permanent Art Collection
Oversee and curate the permanent collection. Obtain appraisals on collection, survey condition of collection annually if indoors, monthly if outdoors, and arrange for conservation, matting and framing as needed. Oversee annual inventory of collection. Accession new works of art into the collection, research, describe and photograph for accession card. Process all art loans to other institutions. Discuss possible gifts of works of art with donors, President, Art Committee, and present to Board of Trustees for final acceptance. Oversee insurance on the collection.
Design permanent installation of sculpture collection in the gardens and grounds. Install selections from the permanent collection in offices and gallery hall. Curate all new art acquisitions.
Research and analyze viability of prospective exhibition, reading trade publications and leading art websites, and traveling to exhibitions in other venues when appropriate. Work with lending institutions to obtain exhibition descriptions, images, captions and all other marketing material. Act as subject matter expert on all exhibitions and permanent collections for press interviews and other questions.
Establish a volunteer docent program, provide training, and coordinate group tours for community and school groups. Write and record audio tours for exhibits. Be outgoing to the local arts community, seek out and encourage potential donors of art work to consider Four Arts.
Prepare Board of Trustees reports on Art Exhibitions. Attend Board of Trustees meetings. Work closely with the Chair of the Arts Committee, helping to set the agenda for two meetings of the committee per year.
Order catalogues, postcards, and merchandise that revolves around exhibitions for the gift shop (coordinate with Membership/Accounting Services Director).
Requirements for the position:
Master’s Degree in Art History, or equivalent
Five years or more experience in the art world with a broad background in all periods of art
Wide knowledge of art museums and their holdings
Skillful at arts administration and working with volunteer committees
Experience in selecting and hanging traveling exhibitions
Position to be filled by summer or early fall 2018
